Automation - From Database to Visio dependancy diagram

$

Hello,

As part of my work, I'm trying to find a way for MS Visio 2013 to automatically generate a dependancy diagram based on my MS Excel 2013 Database (a table worksheet)? In order words, every time I edit/update my Excel database, I would like to be able to see Visio generate/update a diagram similar to the one found at the URL below. My questions are:

A) Is this possible?

B) If yes, how can I achieve this?

C) If no, what is the alternative solution (with the steps required)?

Your help and answers will be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!!

Help needs - Vision 2010 - Making Swimlanes minimum margins?

$

0

Hi all, sorry if this has been asked before.

Is there a minimum width/space/gap that must be left between a swimlane shape and the border of the swimlane? I only have one row of shapes in a swimlane that I'd like to narrow, but there is approx 1 inch of blank space that I just can't get rid of.

Any suggestions very gratefully received. I have re-sized the swimlane but this is as far as I get.

Thanks.

Visio Gannt Chart Help

I am working on a timeline for some IT projects.

I am wondering if it is possible to have several Visio Gannt Charts, and then have a dynamic Master Gannt Chart showing my overall project timelines in concert.

IE: I would like to have 3 project gannt charts, and then a master chart showing me overlaid tasks for each so that i can build a weekly todo list of the master chart, and then still have separate project charts.

Thanks,

Brandon

Line color behavior for shapes.

All,

I want to use the MS standard BPMN Gateway in a stencil that I want to make for a project. I also use the built in office theme, in order to align to what we are making in Word and Excel. So far so good...

Trouble starts when I set the color of the gateway to yellow. At that time all the internal lines get set to white. Obviously those two colors don't really work. I have taken a dive in the master sheet definitions, layes, shapesheet(s). What ever I do I can't seem to assign black to the lines.

Un-grouping seems the only way to do it but that just blows up the shape and my problem.

Any tips about where to look are appreciated. I you want the file drop me a line.

Many thanks,

Hi All,

I am trying to install visio professional 2010 silently. I have created MSP file with following settings :

I have created config.xml with following settings :

<Configuration Product="Visio">
<Display Level="none" CompletionNotice="no" SuppressModal="yes" AcceptEula="yes" />
<Setting Id="Reboot" Value="Never" />
<Setting Id="SETUP_REBOOT" Value="NEVER" />
</Configuration>

I have tried executing the following commands :

setup.exe /adminfile <path of msp>

setup.exe /config <path of config.xml> /adminfile <path of msp>

But this pops up the installation window ("Install Now" "Customize") and it is not getting installed silently.

Can someone tell me how can I suppress the window and install it silently.

Thanks,

Roy

Visio Container Heading Text Box Resize

$

Sorry if this has been asked and answered but I have scoured the internet and cannot find a single thread relating to this.  Maybe my google-fu stinks, but I'm banging my head against a wall trying to figure this out.  Its so simple yet once again Microsoft has made things needlessly complicated, just like Word and Excel.  I shouldn't need training and certifications to be able to know how to do things that should just work...  /rant

Anyways, I just want to be able to resize the Header text box for a container.  I'm using Visio 2013 and I'm using the Container Style called "Notch".  I figured out how to use the Paragraph controls to rotate the heading text so that it displays vertically, but I have to put the heading at 12pt font or less if I don't set it to Bold, or 10pt or less if I do set it to bold just to keep the word "Applications" from wrapping inside of the insanely tiny little text box they give you.  The container itself is sized pretty large (it contains 30 square shapes inside of it), so 12pt un-bolded text looks really darn small.

I can select the heading text box, but the only option is to move it.  There are no options to resize it.  That is insanity!!  You should be able to resize a stupid text box.  What a painfully simple thing I'm trying to do yet it seems to be impossible.  I know I can just create a vertical text box on my own and probably link it or something to the container (I'm a Visio newb so I don't know if that's possible) but I don't really know how to do that and I feel like I shouldn't have to do that.

So either I'm missing something really obvious or Microsoft has once again made something needlessly complicated like all of their Office applications seem to be...

Thanks for any help you can provide

what do the numbers mean after the shapes?

I have previously just re-used rectangles and arrows from old diagrams but I see with the 2010 version shape names are followed by a decimal-like number and arrows for example have several different decimal-like numbers

What do they mean

Visio 2013 - How to add text popups (ScreenTips) on shapes when viewed as a web page?

$

Could the instructions copied below for Visio 2010 be re-written for Visio Pro 2013? I've tried accomplishing the equivalent via what I thought may have been the renamed and re-positioned options, but it's not working.

Our users view the process diagrams in Visio Web Viewer, and we need to attach context to the shapes in some cases.

Answer from prior post:

Summary:
You can add the User.visEquivTitle cell to your shape and provide a string
that will display as a tooltip in the web output. The shape must also have
at least one custom property for the tooltip to be visible.

Steps:
1) Select the shape in your drawing that you want to add a web tooltip for
2) Go to Window > Show Shapesheet
3) Go to Insert > Section, check User-defined cells and click OK
4) In the newly created section, click on the row name User.Row_1 to select
the title of the row
5) Type visEquivTitle and press Enter - you should now see
User.visEquivTitle for the row
6) In the Value cell of that row, enter the text you want to display
surrounded by quotes (e.g. "Hello World")
7) If you instead want to display the same tooltip as the Shape ScreenTip
enter =Comment (no quotes)
8) Go to Insert > Section, check Custom properties and click OK
9) You can fill in the custom property Label and Value if you want this
information to be visible
10) If you don't want the custom property to be visible, enter TRUE in the
Invisible cell
11) Close the Shapesheet window and repeat for any other shape you like
12) Choose File > Save as Web Page to create the HTML output

As you can see this is a bit involved. The capability was designed more as
a developer feature than an end user feature. I recommend tying the Shape
ScreenTip to the User cell so that you see the same tooltip in both Visio
and the web output. It should also be possible to use Macro Recorder to
automate these steps. If your shape has a custom property but does not have
the User.visEquivTitle cell, Visio will display the shape's text in a
tooltip instead.

Visio 2013 Installation Issue

When downloading Visio 2013 and running the install program, I get an error stating that a "newer version of office is on my system, and that I need to uninstall it first to install an older version." But I am not installing MS Office, only Visio. I did recently bought the MS Office Home & Student and downloaded it and installed it. Both software show on my account.

PDF save options missing

$

I installed Visio 2010, activated it and it worked... it saved PDFs as expected and allowed us to select a page range to export as PDF. Then one day, it gave us a warning that we needed to activate. Oh well, I thought, and entered the activation info again and the message went away. It was around this time, the user says, that the PDF options disappeared. Now he needs to export all pages to PDF since there is no option to select a range, then he uses Acrobat to delete the pages he doesn't want. We've had a few people look at it, and found lots of instructions on the web that suggest we click "options" to choose a page range, but there is no longer any page range options or an "options" button when saving as PDF. Any ideas what happened?

Visio 2013 Org Chart Wizard not running

I have Visio Professional 2013 installed, and in the Options/Advance/General section the Enable Automation Events is checked, and nothing is listed in the disabled Add-In section.  However, when I try to use the Org Chart Wizard, nothing happens, it just goes to an empty sheet.  When I choose the Org Chart in the ribbon at the top and try to click on the Import button, nothing happens.

Any idea on what might be limiting this functionality?

Thanks,
JB

Drawing size / scaling

 I apologize if this is very elementary to everyone. I'm trying to insure that my drawing can always be viewed in their entirety  on one page. Printer paper is 8.5 'x 11"

The floor plan is 200 feet by 100 feet. Can someone walk me thru "page set up" so i can drag scaled stencils onto the page and keep everything in prospective.

Thanks so much

Visio 2013 Default Line and Connector Styles

$

This question has been asked previously, but the answer is not sufficient. In the older versions of Visio, all you had to do was right-click and select the "set as default" option to set the default style for lines/connectors/shapes.

Where is this option for Visio 2013? No, I do not want to have to edit my custom template just to set a default style for lines/connectors/shapes. SETTING A DEFAULT SHOULD BE A BASIC FUNCTION.

Do I need to edit the themes? Because that option does not appear either. Do I need to create a custom theme? How does one do that?

Why should this be so difficult? It was a simple click-select before.

Preserve the Visio macros functionality in Web format

MS Visio 2010

I have a diagram with layers to show the different levels of detail and I use macros to toggle between layers.

Not all users have Visio on their laptops and so I thought publishing my Visio document to the web would allow all users to access the document with working macros. This doesn't work...

If anyone would know how to preserve the Visio macros functionality in a format where all users would be able to access it, please let me know.

Thanks.
